Saw this thread, which provided some info on how to proceed with diagonostics (all of this is done on machine A). Rebooted multiple times out of frustration. Machine B is a test machine: a Dell optiplex 3040 (ubuntu 16.04) on which the adapter works without a hitch. In this question, Machine A refers to the problem machine: a Dell optiplex 3020 (ubuntu 16.04). It does not show up on ifconfig or in the system tray (my machine only has an ethernet, and the WiFi option was completely absent). On restarting, it does not work with the machine anymore. It was working fine with my machine until today evening, where a power failure occured.
